Kilternan Parish Lawn Tennis Club History
Tennis was
first played on the Rectory lawn beside Kilternan Parish Church of Ireland
Church in 1933/34 during the incumbency of Canon Byrne. The Canon subsequently arranged that a corner
of the field adjoining the Church was fenced off for the use of a Tennis Club. Two grass courts were laid and a simple
wooden pavilion and a shed for equipment were erected. (It is possible that a croquet lawn was included.)
During the
40’s and 50’s the Tennis Club was part of the Parish Social Club, whose
activities included Table Tennis and Snooker in the Parochial Hall during the
winter. Saturday afternoon in the summer
was quite a social occasion with tea, sandwiches and cakes prepared by the
ladies. The men of course, had to attend
to mowing, rolling and marking the grass courts.
The wooden
pavilion was blown down by September gales in the late 50’s and a concrete
structure was built comprising a gent’s changing room and a ladies’ changing
room with a small communal room between.
During the 60’s the minutes of committee meetings indicate a
preoccupation with the problems of maintaining the grass courts and finally in
1969 the first hard court was installed.
Club membership increased in the early 80’s,
with 64 families registered in 1983. The
practice wall was erected in 1982 and the second hard court was added in 1985
at a cost of about £5,500. There seemed
to be general dissatisfaction with the surface of the latter and when the third
hard court was laid in 1988 the second court was resurfaced.
With three
hard courts in use the Club could enter teams in the Dublin Area Tennis Leagues
and a new competitive era began. The
courts were dramatically improved in 1994, when they were professionally
levelled, resurfaced and painted by
Casey Courts.
1994 –
Pavilion membership made available for those wishing to attend events and to keep
in touch with the club.
1998 –
Floodlights were installed .
2002 - The hard courts were replaced and on
September 30th three new Astro turf courts were officially opened by
the Minister for Sport Seamus Brennan.
2010 – New
fencing installed around courts at a cost of €4,915.
2011 – Courts
were deep cleaned and sand replaced.
2012 –
Clubhouse renovated. Much needed repairs
to the roof were carried out and the windows and door were replaced.
2016 –
Courts re-surfaced by Pride Sports (green astro turf with red surround)
2017 – New
Service gate installed and wheelchair access to courts provided. As work on the new Parish Centre began and
the Clubhouse was demolished to make way for a new Car Park a “loghouse” was
purchased and erected at the West end of the site to provide shelter and basic
facilities for members as a temporary measure.
2018 – New
Parish Centre opened in September with Changing rooms, toilets and showers for
the use of Tennis Club members. The
“Gathering Grounds café” operates during school opening hours in the Centre and
is widely used by the whole community.
